National Father-Daughter Take a Walk Day

National Father-Daughter Take a Walk Day

As a young girl who lacked a father figure, I would have embraced this beautiful day. The idea of taking a walk in nature with my dad while sharing stories about life and seeking his advice would have made me feel like a very special princess–and all young girls should feel like their daddy’s little princess.

Finding Quality Time in Busy Schedules

One-on-one time with a father is critically important for the healthy development of children. With lives filled with work, school, activities, and chores, it can be difficult to carve out time for the toughest and most important job–raising children. In fact, 60 percent of parents describe their daily lives as “hectic” and one in four say that the lack of quality family time away from chores, work, school or TV is a real problem.

Making Children Our Priority

National Father-Daughter Take A Walk Day reminds fathers to pause, reflect, and remember that children are our priority. We are their role-models, leaders, and moral compass to find success in a world lacking in the same.

The only way to earn respect, build trust, inspire honesty, and teach integrity is by spending time with children away from daily distractions. Instead of a once a year date on a calendar, make National Father-Daughter Take A Walk Day a weekly tradition.

Carving out One-On-One Time

You may find exploring local parks together a worthwhile adventure. There are plenty of beautiful parks that beg visitors to enjoy their splendor. If time doesn’t permit a walk in the park, then walk around the neighborhood. Teach your child how to build community by introducing yourselves and saying hello to neighbors. Better yet, take it a step further and find a community cause you are both passionate about and volunteer together.

Improving Our Children’s Wellbeing

Research has shown a father’s healthy involvement with his daughter increases her self-confidence, improves her body image, leads her to earn higher grades, promotes professional success, and will help her choose her romantic relationships wisely.

Start tonight: Take a walk with your daughter and make a difference in her life.

“She did not stand alone, but what stood behind her, the most potent moral force of her life, was the love of her father.” – Harper Lee, Go Set A Watchman
