“Life is short and there will always be dirty dishes, so let’s dance.” – James Howe
Dance Like Nobody’s Watching
I love Van Morrison’s album “Moondance”. After a long day at work, I’ll pour myself a glass of wine and sway to the soothing rhythm as I cook dinner. I’ve never considered myself to be a skilled dancer. In fact, I more than likely resemble Elaine’s iconic dance moves from Seinfeld.
Dancing Boldly with Reckless Abandon
When I was younger, I used to be a self-conscious dancer. I’d shyly glance around the room to see if anyone was watching while simultaneously praying that they weren’t. As I’ve gotten older, I care much less about what people think and much more about what makes me happy. These days, I will boldly dance anywhere and, like Elaine, will do it with reckless abandon. I even have my students show me the latest dance moves. That never fails to evoke some raucous laughter as they express embarrassment for me.
Starting the Day with a Dance-Off
Each day before school starts, I delight in watching my 6th graders hold dance-offs. They turn on my Alexa and get down to business. When they dance, their smiles stretch from ear-to-ear, and the energy in my room immediately fills with good vibes.
So, whether you dance like nobody’s watching or have an audience, just dance. Moving our body to the beat of a favorite song is fun and freeing, it’s is good for the heart and soul, and it’s a great social activity. Findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine also suggest that getting your boogie on regularly is linked to a 76 percent reduction in dementia risk – about as much as playing board games or a musical instrument.
Finally, don’t forget to slow dance! There is nothing more romantic than holding your partner close as you swing rhythmically back and forth to a favorite ballad.
